Owhiro Stream Restoration ProjectWelcome to the Friends of Owhiro Stream web siteFriends of Owhiro Stream (FOOS) formed in 2003 to restore and protect the Owhiro stream. The stream is the only unpiped stream flowing to the south coast in Wellington City. It provides important habitat for aquatic animals and the surrounding bush acts as a valuable connecting corridor between places such as Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and the town belt. Recent surveys show that banded kokopu and shortfin eels are living in the stream. The group hope to see all five species of inanga return to the stream eventually. So far, with the help of the local community, Friends of Owhiro Stream has planted over 8000 native trees. Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council have provided support with weed control and native plants. FOOS have also involved local schools with their planting programme. Working beesRegular weekend working-bees are planned for the 2nd Saturday morning of each month, commencing at 10 a.m. A mid-week working-bee is also held every Wednesday morning, commencing at 10.00 a.m. ContactsContact Friends of Owhiro Stream at: Paul Blaschke |
